    • Early results indicate that we are making good progress towards our 2014 goal

    • Part of our industry target is to reduce our workforce accident frequency rate
    • At the end of 2009/10, our workforce accident frequency rate was down to 0.16 reportable accidents per 100,000 hours worked.

    • Last year 233 young men and women joined our apprenticeship scheme
    • We have received over 10,000 applications for 217 places on our 2010/11 apprenticeship scheme
    • Over the next five years we will continue to train skilled technicians who will become the future of Network Rail.

    Our target for 2009/10 was to be in the top 25 per cent of the overall Gallup Q12 database – which means we were aiming to achieve a grand mean of at least 4.21

    • Since we began Q12 in 2002, our engagement score has increased from a grand mean of 3.16 to 3.80, which is great progress but falls short of our 2009 target of 4.21
    • In 2010/11 we will target key areas of our business where levels of engagement are lower than average.

    • In April 2010 we rolled out a new Code of Business Ethics to replace our business conduct policy
    • The code applies to all of the activities of Network Rail and sets out the minimum standards expected from all employees and directors in their dealings with our internal and external customers.

    To invest £41m in training centres for our people.

    Over the next five to six years we are proposing to spend around £41m on modern vocational centres around Britain for our people and the rail industry

    • We’ve invested in multi-million pound training and development centres nationwide
    • This includes our Walsall Training Centre, which opened in March 2010
    • This is part of a long-term strategy to build and operate world class training facilities
    • The facilities will create an inspirational and engaging learning environment.

    To develop numeracy and literacy skills for frontline workers.

    In 2009/10 we will development of adult numeracy and literacy skills for our frontline workers. We aim to raise skills to a minimum of Level 2 across the Company

    • We have completed a skills profiling exercise that covers literacy and numeracy for all our front line maintenance posts
    • We have developed a competency programme to improve the skills of our workforce
    • This will be rolled out in the future so our people can reach the necessary level.

    To carry out deeper analysis of the causes of sickness absence to help target health interventions and communications. Proposals include mobile screening, a weight management programme and health fairs

    • A ‘Health Fair’ pilot was carried out in February 2010 at Wakefield Kirkgate Depot 
    • We are looking at the introduction of mobile units to provide onsite noise and vibration screening
    • We hope mobile units will save people having to travel to their nearest BUPA clinic
    • We are developing guidance for line managers who manage staff with health issues caused by being overweight
    • We will produce support materials for employees to reduce the health issues from being overweight.

    • In 2009/10 we have improved communication with our frontline workers
    • This was done through our ‘Frontline Focus’ DVDs which enable managers to communicate key safety messages
    • In 2009 we committed £10m to a national level crossing closure programme
    • We now have agreements in place to close 391 user operated level crossings.
