  • After - bridge lift night

We're improving the railway network through a number of major infrastructure projects, designed to increase capacity and improve journeys for passengers.

  • Managing stations

We manage 18 of Britain's busiest stations, such as Manchester Piccadilly and London Liverpool Street.

  • Portsmouth bound train

Our aim is to deliver ever-improving train services to our customers and passengers.

  • Network Rail

We own and operate Britain's railway infrastructure, including tracks, signals, tunnels, bridges, viaducts and level crossings.

We also manage 18 of Britain’s busiest stations, serving more than half of all passenger journeys, and own a further 2,500 stations which are leased to train operators.

Better for our passengers and freight users

We’re working hard to make rail even safer, more accessible, more affordable and more inclusive for all. We’re already providing an ever improving service, with increasing punctuality, passenger satisfaction and safety performance.

    Better for our employees

We want to attract the most talented people and be a company people want to work for. A company where people can develop their skills and take the opportunities they need to build long term, rewarding careers.

    Better for our communities

We want to be a good neighbour to those who live or work near the railway. We aim to have a positive impact on society, and we encourage our employees to support charities and the communities in which they work.

    Better for the environment

We want to reduce our impact on the environment and maintain rail’s position as a low carbon mode of transport. We’re also one of the largest land owners in Britain so protecting our natural resources is a priority. We’re working hard to use more sustainable products in everything we do.

    Our financial performance

We are at the end of the first year of Control Period 4 (CP4), our five year regulatory settlement.

    • we have made good progress in 2009/10 and have delivered a set of financial results that are in line with our CP4 Delivery Plan published in March 2009
    • our financial structure is strong and sustainable and this year represented a good start to the control period.

More information on our financial performance can be found in our 2010 Annual Report and Accounts.

    Our governance

We are regulated by the Office of Rail Regulation, the economic and safety regulator for the railway. We are a not-for-dividend company, so all of our profits are reinvested in the railway. Our Members hold our board to account for their management of the business and monitor their standards of corporate governance.

    Our values

Our work is shaped by four values. These values - determination, respect, teamwork and pride - underpin everything we do.
