Gogar rail interchange

The Gogar Rail Interchange project comprises the creation of a new interchange station on the Edinburgh to Fife railway lines in the Gogar area. This would be located adjacent to a new stop on the Edinburgh Tram network for onward passenger transfer to Edinburgh Airport.

The design will provide secure, covered cycle parking for a maximum of 100 cycles, including 5 cycle lockers immediately next to the station building. The cycle parking area will be supervised by CCTV. Cyclists will also benefit from lifts provided within the station building sufficiently large enough to accommodate bikes. The subway under the A8 from the Gyle Shoppng Centre will also provide access for both cycles and pedestrians.

Gogar Rail Interchange is the first physical part of the Edinburgh to Glasgow Improvement Programme which aims to improve rail services in Central Scotland. The Scottish Government are the client for the Programme which is being financed and delivered by Network Rail and estimated to cost between £500 million and £1.05 billion.

Edinburgh - Glasgow Improvement Programme will:

  • Provide a major boost to the wealth of Scotland and its long term sustainability;
  • Make significant improvements to the connections between Edinburgh and Glasgow via all routes through the provision of increased capacity across all Edinburgh to Glasgow corridors;
  • Increase service levels between the two cities from 5 or 6 services per hour to 13 services per hour with a fastest end to end journey time of around 35 minutes;
  • Create a new rail/tram interchange station at Gogar facilitating access to Edinburgh airport for people from the North East of Scotland and Fife; and
  • Electrifying of 8 routes in the central belt or 350km of the existing rail network.
