Workington's temporary station is now open
Network Rail's new temporary station at Workington North opened for first passengers on 30 November 2009 where free shuttle trains will connect Workington with people north of the River Derwent. All services travelling north and south of the present Workington station will stop at the new station where services will continue as long as needed.
Telecoms cables from the doomed Calva Bridge over the River Derwent have been diverted over the unaffected railway bridge nearby. Robin Gisby, Operations and Customer Service director, said: “This is just another example of how everyone pulls together in times of trouble. It's estimated that there were 1,000 telephone lines that could have been affected by the collapse or demolition of the Calva Bridge, but running a cable over our railway bridge should mean their uninterrupted use.”
