Permissible Line-Speeds

This defines the maximum speed at which trains may operate on a track. The maximum permissible speed of any one train may be limited by other considerations.

Each route section is governed by a speed limit. Separate limits may be imposed for different types of passenger and freight trains. Line speeds will also be governed by other factors, such as the capabilities of the signalling or the nature of the track.

Line speeds impact on freight trains to varying degrees, and this is taken into consideration when constructing a timetable. Detailed information about line speeds is contained in Table A of the Sectional Appendix, published to railway industry parties.
