Planned Rail Improvements

Spring bank holiday 23 - 25 May 2009

Growing the railway video

Over the Spring bank holiday weekend more than 4,500 of our people will be working day and night across Britain to deliver 160,000 hours of work and more than £40 million worth of investment into the railway.

Fewer people use the network on bank holiday weekends, which means it is the least disruptive time for us to carry out major rail improvements. However, there will be 1,500 extra trains running this weekend compared to 2008 and 30% fewer replacement buses than during the same bank holiday weekend last year.

The improvements are part of the £35 billion we will be investing over the next five years in Britain’s railway. The result will be more seats, more trains arriving on time and new journey opportunities for passengers and freight carriers on a network which is increasingly reliable and more cost effective than before.

Network Rail understands this work can have an impact on people’s journeys and has been working closely with its rail industry partners to give passengers the information they need before they travel.

Although much of the network is open as usual, Network Rail advises travellers to plan their journeys in advance. Passengers can check before they travel with National Rail enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 or at www.nationalrail.co.uk/Holidays.
