Swindon
| Swindon in Wiltshire, then a village, was at the highest point on the Great Western Railway’s line from London to Bristol. It was also near the mid-point, which influenced its choice as the site for the factory to build the company’s trains. Brunel and the company’s locomotive superintendent Daniel Gooch laid out these locomotive works, which developed into a vast industrial enterprise, and created a ‘railway village’ of cottages for the workforce. These later developed into the large modern town. These images show additions made to the station c.1872. |
