Brunel

Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s vast achievements and his genius as a designer have made him one of the giants of British history – and the most celebrated engineer of all time.

Beginning an extraordinary career in the railways aged just 26, he went on to oversee the design and construction of 1,400 miles of track, including elegant and innovative stations, bridges, viaducts, tunnels and routes. Most of the railway and the structures he created remain in use as part of our modern network, 200 years after his birth.

The 'Discover the Legacy' exhibition concentrates mainly on one aspect of his extraordinary legacy: the origional Great Western Railway, the 118-mile long line from London to Bristol. Brunel was appointed engineer to the newly-formed 'Bristol Railway' in 1833.
