Strategic Freight Sites
Strategic freight sites are sites that were identified during privatisation as important for future use by the rail freight business. They are not currently in use and may or may not have rail connections.
Network Rail manages strategic freight sites in line with agreed rail industry procedures. When there is a demand for new traffic, we usually give leases for these sites to the relevant freight operator. Network Rail, and the larger freight operating companies, reviews the sites every six months. Network Rail is likely to become involved if:
- A freight operating company wants to lease a strategic freight site
- Someone has asked for a track access quotation for a flow of traffic into or from a strategic freight site
These two scenarios are closely related because a freight operating company can ask for a lease only if it plans to have a track access agreement into or out of the strategic freight site.
Network Rail Freight Commercial and Rail Industries Group will co-ordinate any application from a licensed freight operating company. If you want more information about agreed or potential sites, please contact one of our Route Freight Managers.
Our policy is to keep open existing track connections to strategic freight sites and to consult freight operating companies if we are planning to disconnect them.
