The Railway's Contribution

Looking after the track

Britain's economy could not function without the railway.

The railway carries:

  • 2.75 million passengers every day - that's over one billion per year
  • 500,000 London commuters every week
  • 79% of the UK’s coal and coal products
  • 34% of UK’s metals
  • The direct benefit of the railway to users is estimated to be £15 billion per year
  • The benefit to non-users is estimated to be a further £2.9 billion

Our Mission

Our Mission is to provide a safe, reliable and efficient railway fit for the 21st century

When Network Rail took over the railway network in October 2002, we inherited a tired, worn-out infrastructure that had been starved of investment for many years.

New Beginning

Network Rail represents a new beginning, a new vision and a new way of delivering Britain’s railway. We are investing in our workforce and introducing new technologies.

There are 32,000 of us at Network Rail and we are working hard to improve every aspect of the railway. We have made enormous progress in just four years. Under our stewardship, the railway is already safer, more reliable and more efficient.

We are ambitious for the future of the railway and wish to grow the railway, meeting the demands and aspirations of rail users. Our task now is to build on the progress we have made so that we can transform Britain’s railway into a world-class infrastructure.
