Tom Bacon, 21 years

Tom is a student on the Foundation Degree in Railway Engineering. He describes his experience on the programme -

“It was certainly the degree element that I liked, but it was also a chance to gain experience in the field. I always wanted to test the water in different areas before committing myself to one career route, and this course has let me do just this.

“Being sponsored by Network Rail has also put me in a strong position to find a good job within the industry.

“’Challenging’ is probably the best word to describe the university part of the course. There’s a lot to fit in, but I’ve found that if I apply myself and schedule things carefully, I can still have a busy social life. There’s an active social scene here and it’s been very easy to make friends with other course members.

“In fact, I’ve been very impressed all round with how friendly everyone is and how willing people are to share their knowledge. I’ve learnt loads at Sheffield Hallam and I’ve just started my work placement, which fortunately is close to home.

“As for the future, I’m not totally sure which direction I will eventually specialise in and I’ll probably take up the option of further study to gain the BEng honours degree. One thing’s certain, though: I’ll be staying in the rail industry for a long time to come.”
