At Network Rail, the health and safety of our people, passengers, colleagues and partners is at the forefront of everything we do.
Staff safety
Our Safety 365 campaign has been extremely successful in highlighting key risks to our people. It focuses on track and frontline safety issues such as hazards, safe walking and carrying, and safety communications. Safety 365 uses hard-hitting videos and other tools to illustrate the dangers and potential consequences of neglecting safe working practices.
Confidential incident reporting and analysis system (CIRAS)
If any of our employees comes across a practice or situation that doesn’t comply with our policies but feels unable to use our normal procedures to discuss it, they can use this system. They’ll be treated confidentially and sensitively, and their identity won’t be revealed without their consent. Visit the CIRAS website to find out more
We follow industry best practice on safety
The Network Rail health and safety management system is how we meet our objectives and control risks across our whole organisation. It follows industry best practice. We also ask our contractors and suppliers to take a systematic approach to understanding risk and managing safety before dealing with our infrastructure. Everyone’s role is vital
Our safety performance is affected by everyone’s individual contributions, so we expect every employee to make it integral to their work. In particular, all our managers are responsible for health and safety - we expect them to promote the right attitudes and behaviours, and drive continuous improvement. We also have relevant staff policies covering safety, drugs and alcohol, and good conduct.
We have a zero tolerance level to drugs and alcohol misuse in the workplace, which we monitor with regular drug and alcohol testing and disciplinary action.
