Climate Change

Rail has an important role to play in an environmentally-sustainable future.

We aim to continue the development of rail as a sustainable form of transport.

Reducing the UK’s emissions

Carbon dioxide emissions from rail are generally around two-thirds of car emissions (on a per passenger mile basis) and around one-eighth of heavy goods vehicle emissions (on a tonne of freight per mile basis).

Pollutants produced by transport (car, lorry and diesel rail locomotive) include nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide. Rail produces less overall pollution – even allowing for recent improvements in car engines and cleaner fuels.

Reducing emissions from stations

We have significantly improved the air quality in the 18 stations run by Network Rail by implementing a strict shut-down policy so that engines run only when necessary. We also monitor diesel emissions in the stations.

Reducing our “carbon footprint”

As a major consumer of energy, in the forms of electricity & fuel, we believe we have a responsibility to calculate and report on our direct & indirect emissions of greenhouse gases or its ‘carbon footprint’.

We are currently developing a utility energy management plan to improve the way we use energy and reduce our overall consumption.
