Cutting the congestion in Reading

01 December 2011

We're replacing one of the Cow Lane bridges this Christmas to get rid of the bottleneck plaguing both motorists and train passengers.

The two very narrow barrel arches are notorious for causing traffic congestion in the town.

During December and January, we will replace the first of the two rail bridges with a new structure that will make way for two lanes of traffic, a cycle path and pavement. It will reduce congestion and allow double-decker buses to pass through.

The new bridge structure is being built at a nearby site and will be slotted into place, in a similar way to the Caversham Road Bridge lift last year.

Our project director Bill Henry said: “The work we are doing on the Cow Lane bridges has two-fold benefits. Not only will it pave the way for an improved railway in Reading but also help solve the traffic problems that plague Cow Lane.

“We’ve worked closely with Reading Borough Council and local residents to plan for the work. Replacing the bridge means the temporary closure of Cow Lane and we appreciate drivers’ patience in using diversions until the work finishes on 30 January.”

Work to the second bridge will finish in 2015, when motorists will feel the full benefit of the improvements.

Cow Lane temporary closure

Cow Lane will be closed between 19 December 2011 to 30 January 2012 while the work is done - diversions will be in place.
